Show preview/interview: Chris Wyse of The Cult @ The Fillmore Detroit August 8th, 2013

Posted on 14:11 by Unknown

Bassist and vocalist Chris Wyse is no stranger to the music scene, having performed and recorded tracks with everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Mick Jagger to The Cult, as well as finding time to found and front his own band Owl back in 2007. Hailing from Queens, NY, his early years were heavily influenced by his Irish heritage listening to his parents albums, before discovering the likes of Kiss and Led Zeppelin in school. Inspired by Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, he took to bass as his instrument of choice and quickly developed his own unique style of play and sound that found him being profiled in Guitar Player Magazine at age 17. Chris took some time to speak with me over the phone today from Seattle, WA where he will be playing at the Showbox Sodo this evening with The Cult. Click the link below for the audio interview.

Interview with Chris Wyze The Cult and Owl

Owl: The Right Thing

Chris is headed out on tour with The Cult on their Electric 13 tour, where they will be playing their 1987 Rick Rubin-produced landmark album Electric in its entirety for the first time ever. On the Electric 13 trek, The Cult will play their 1987 Rick Rubin-produced landmark album Electric in its entirety for the first time ever. Each tour stop will feature a first set of the platinum-selling Electric boasting standouts like ‘Love Removal Machine,’ ‘Wild Flower’ and ‘Lil’ Devil’ and a second set highlighting The Cult’s 30-year catalogue of hits. The Cult is set to release new material in 2014 to follow-up to their 2012 album Weapon of Choice, and a double album called Electric Peace is due out July 30th.

Great White to rock Detroit riverfront Friday Aug. 2nd.

Check back later this week when we post an interview with Great White Guitarist Michael Lardie!

The 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront free summer concert series will feature L.A. hard rockers Great White on Friday, Aug. 2. The concert, presented by Detroit’s #1 for Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX-FM, will rock the riverfront stage starting a 7:30 p.m. with opener Artificial Agent of Detroit.

Great White has been churning out memorable songs since the early 80's, when Jack Russell and Mark Kendall joined forces and adopted the blues-based sound that went against the era's glam rock grain.

Great White quickly attracted attention on the L.A. club scene. Their independently released EP Out of the Night sold 20,000 copies and got local airplay. Great White was snapped up by EMI America, which issued the eponymous Great White in 1984. That year, the band embarked on their first European tour with Whitesnake, and segued to a 5-month U.S. arena run with Judas Priest.

The 1987 album Once Bitten, which featured the hit tracks "Rock Me," "Lady Red Light," and "Save Your Love," went platinum. Their next album Twice Shy, which featured the Top 5 hit "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," more than doubled that tally.

Spanning six consecutive Friday evenings, 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront offers more than free concerts. Located in the heart of the city, between the GM Renaissance Center and Detroit River, the event has become a summer destination for dining and entertainment in Detroit. Upcoming shows include:

Aug. 9: Loverboy (Working for the Weekend, Turn Me Loose)

Aug. 16: Night Ranger (Sister Christian, (You Can Still) Rock in America)

Admission to the concerts is always free and no tickets are necessary. Viewing space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets, but outside food, beverages and coolers are not permitted. In addition, boaters on the Detroit River are welcome to anchor near the riverfront and enjoy the shows from the water.

Andiamo Detroit Riverfront will provide refreshments and food concessions at several locations across the plaza. Andiamo Detroit Riverfront and Joe Muer Seafood will accept dinner reservations before and after the concert and both restaurants offer outdoor patios overlooking the Detroit River and the Rockin’ on the Riverfront stage.

Convenient parking is available for $5 per vehicle, starting at 5 p.m., at the GM surface lot at the intersection of St. Antoine and Atwater streets, adjacent to the GM Renaissance Center.

The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is offering an incredible package during the concerts. The Marriott-Andiamo Romance Retreat package includes a four-course dinner at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront and overnight accommodations at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. For reservations call (888) 313-5001 and mention promotional code WN9 or visit The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center .

Listen to 94.7 WCSX each week during Rockin’ on the Riverfront for a chance to win VIP seats, a catered dinner by Andiamo, and meet and greet opportunities with the bands. Additionally, new to the event this year is Veterans Row. Veterans are invited to log onto www.wcsx.com, fill out an online form sharing where he or she served or is currently serving and WCSX will pull weekly winners to sit in the 94.7 WCSX Veterans Row for each Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert this summer.

Fans are invited to watch FOX 2 in the Morning every week to enter a FOX 2 EXPOSED contest for a chance to win a VIP prize package, which includes two (2) VIP access wristbands and lanyards with front-row seats, dinner for two (2) at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront in the Rockin’ on the Riverfront VIP section (the evening of the concert only), overnight accommodations for two (2) at The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center (the evening of the concert only), free parking in the Beaubien Garage located on Beaubien Street (the evening of the concert only), WCSX 94.7 FM freebies, and a band meet-and-greet (if available). To enter, access the online contest entry form on MyFoxDetroit.com and follow instructions.

In addition to Chevrolet, the 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert series is sponsored in partnership with Detroit’s #1 for Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX-FM, Quicken Loans, McDonald’s After Midnight, Metro PCS, and WJBK FOX 2.

Pictures: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and Black Stone Cherry @ DTE Energy Music Theatre 07/23/2013

Posted on 07:25 by Unknown
Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company celebrate significant 40th anniversaries in 2013, with Lynyrd Skynyrd having released their debut album on August 13, 1973 and Bad Company being formed that same year. While the pair have shared the stage and Paul Rodgers has toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and Skynyrd have never toured as co-headliners together.

Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, Lynyrd Skynyrd has maintained a tremendous legacy that began over 40 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and continues with the recently released Last Of A Dying Breed (Roadrunner). The band's career was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, and then subsequently faced adversity through the losses of Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they rock on. With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations. The current line-up features Gary Rossington (Guitar), Johnny Van Zant (Vocals), Rickey Medlocke (Guitar), Mark "Sparky" Matejka (Guitar), Michael Cartellone (Drums), Johnny Colt (Bass), Peter Keys (Keyboards), Dale Krantz Rossington- Honkettes (Backing Vocals) and Carol Chase-Honkettes (Backing Vocals).

Bad Company were dubbed a super-group upon the band's formation due to the union of Free's Paul Rodgers (Vocals / Multi-Instrumentalist) with Mott The Hoople's Mick Ralphs (Guitar) plus King Crimson's Boz Burrell (Bass) and Free's Simon Kirke (Drums). Over the next nine years, the band released a string of six albums, yielding international hits "Can't Get Enough," "Bad Company," "Feel Like Makin' Love," and many others penned by the main songwriters Paul Rodgers and Mick Ralphs. Original members Rodgers, Ralphs, and Kirke will be joined by guitarist Howard Leese and bassist Todd Ronning (from Paul Rodgers solo band). Original bassist Boz Burrell passed away in 2006.

Bad Company has inspired many of today's musicians. Most notably, Metal band Five Finger Death Punch who scored a #1 Active Rock hit with a cover of the song "Bad Company". Since 2001, the band has only played 11 isolated performances, and has not staged a tour of The United States until now. In front of the run, Rodgers shares, "When Mick and I formed the band in the 70's we were amazed at the instant success. It didn't hurt to have Led Zeppelin behind us, and we wrote some decent songs that still resonate. This one is for fans."

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Johnny Van Zant offers, "Every member of Skynyrd has been fans of Bad Company from the get go. Personally, Paul is one of my favorite rock singers. We have a deep appreciation for Bad Company’s music and look forward to being on the road with them and sharing the stage.” Paul Rodgers reveals, "The Skynyrds and I go back to the 70's and the days and nights at the Hyatt House on Sunset in LA aka the Riot House. In the 90's the band introduced me to my wife Cynthia, and that's why I am so damned happy and healthy these years."

Special guests and Kentucky-bred hard rockers, Black Stone Cherry were the openers on The 40 Tour. Their music has been described as Southern-fried hard rock about everything from being proud of where you come from and true to who you are.

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog

Wild At Heart

It has been awhile since I have seen a first run film but I have been a big fan of Guillermo del Toro, who I had the pleasure of meeting 2 years ago at Toronto Comic Con while filming this movie) for awhile and really wanted to see his new film "Pacific Rim". I have been a huge anime/manga fan for awhile and I love his tribute to the genres. Watching a film where giant creatures are attacking the Earth to be fought off my humanoid mecha (Jaegers), how could you not get excited by that. There is a lot of really great moments though I wish some of the other Jaeger pilots, esp the Chinese team, could have gotten some more screen time and some of the fight scenes were brighter. Besides that, it was just a really fun movie for a fan of both Harryhausen and Ishiro Honda and a must see for the big screen.

If you rather see a good show, there are some great selections and here they are:

Wednesday (7/31) - Rodrigo y Gabriela @ Royal Oak Music Theatre, Gordon Lightfoot @ Meadowbrook Theatre, Wiz Khalifa w/ B.o.B. @ Pine Knob

Thursday (8/01) - the Stickmen @ Magic Bag, "Weird Al" Yankovic @ Freedom Hill, Ragbirds @ Liberty Plaza (Ann Arbor)

Friday (8/02) - Wailers @ Magic Bag, Ted Nugent @ Pine Knob

Saturday (8/03) - Nick Moss and the Flip Tops @ Callahans, Suicide Machines @ Magic Stick, "Happy Together" w/The Turtles and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap @ Ceasars Windsor

Sunday (8/04) - John Hiatt @ the Ark

Monday (8/05) - Amy Lavere @ Hatchys (Utica)

2013 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival @ DTE Energy Music Theatre

Posted on 18:24 by Unknown

"Hoooooooooooooooooome!" bellowed Kyle "Gumby" Gunther, lead singer of Battlecross, as they took to the stage early in the day at the Rockstar Mayhem Festival this past Sunday at DTE Energy Music Theatre. Judging by the response and size of the crowd that had swelled to fill the parking lot of the festival stage area, it was a long overdue welcome home for Battlecross on this stop of the tour and they set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Not even the smattering of rain with intermittent pelting downpours was going to drive the early crowds away from the Jagermeister stage as the native Michigan blue collar thrash metallers launched in to a ferocious and intense set twenty five minute set that stoked the ferocity of the pit in front of them to near maelstrom levels. If there were ever a mosh pit version of a high school homecoming, this was it, with family, friends and fans alike in attendance to show their support for this hard-working home grown band.

Rockstar Mayhem Day 21 - Clarkston, MI

That's not to say there weren't many other great bands on the bill on this years tour. Huntress kicked of the day with their own blend of metal fronted by the sexy black-caped clad vixen Jill Janus. Supergroup Attika7, with former Biohazard power growler Even Seinfeld greeting the crowd ripping on to the stage on his motorcycle, backed by former members of Metal Church, Nonpoint and Lizzy Borden, reinventing the roots of metal. Finnish melodic death metal masters Children of Bodom also appeared early in the day, along with Machine Head, Butcher Babies, Job For A Cowboy, Emmure and many others.

The big guns came sailing in to the main stage pavillion shortly before 6:20, with the Norse mythology inspired songs of Swedish melodeath band Amon Amarth. With a large Viking ship piercing out through the center of the stage, they had an impressive presence on the main stage, crushing the crowd with tales of conquest, plunder and revenge. They were followed up by the well received sludge rockers Mastodon, unique and inventive in their sound. Five Finger Death Punch brought probably the brightest and flashiest set to the stage with chromed out larger than life logos perched across brass knuckles with gargoyles perched around the stage. One of the most energetic performance of the night, they also had a brief interlude of "Ivan Says", with singer Ivan Moody bringing a select group of kids up on the stage for a round of fun.

Of course, the main attraction of the night was horror rock veteran Rob Zombie, who really needs no introduction to his over the top stage productions replete with walls of flame, smoke, and enough lights to power the city of Detroit and then some. A whirling, shadowy figure of dreads and ghastly makeup, Zombie is always on top of his game when he brings his rock and roll nightmare to town. Pedal to the metal, he packed enough energy and showmanship into his hour plus set that kept the crowd rocking long after the lights went down and they dispersed in to the chilly misty night air in to the parking lot.

MOTORCITYBLOG guest contributor Carl Boone did some interviews backstage for us during the festival. Unfortunately some of the other audio files we had with Huntress, Emmure and City of the Sea were corrupted during the backup transfer process, but we were able to salvage the following interviews.

Chris Kael, Bassist for Five Finger Death Punch

Ginger Fish, Drummer for Rob Zombie

The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem festival is always a celebration of all things metal and this years lineup did not disappoint. The tour wraps up August 4th in Dallas, TX with stops in Atlanta GA, Tampa FL, Austin TX, and The Woodlands TX over the next week before that. Get out and catch it if you can!

JIMMY HOFFA DAY IS TOMORROW!

Posted on 09:19 by Unknown

"Find Jimmy!  Dig a hole!"

With this brief but stirring rallying cry, organizers are set to mobilize the population of Michigan July 30 to aid the energetic, always-entertaining, but as yet ineffective efforts of federal law-enforcement officials to locate the remains of the late labor leader, Jimmy Hoffa.

The first annual observation of Jimmy Hoffa Day, set to correspond with the actual date of Hoffa's disappearance in 1975, is not only a celebration of the man himself, or of the heroic efforts of law enforcement officials, who have dug up acres of everything from pastureland to asphalt, and at one point dismantled an above-ground swimming pool in hopes of discovering Hoffa's remains.  It is also a moving display of can-do spirit and community effort from the Michigan populace.

"We want to find Jimmy Hoffa," an event organizer explains.

"He's been gone for so long.

We're just not wild about spending tax dollars to do it.

We can do this on our own!"

The solution to finding Hoffa's remains, as organizers frame it, is a simple matter of getting enough Michiganders involved:

"We are asking every Michigan resident to take a shovel and dig a hole somewhere on your land.  Anywhere will work."

This "every little bit counts" attitude has given rise to another of the movement's mottos: "No hole too big, no hole too small!"  On their facebook page, organizers list the huge variety of activities that would fall under the broad scope of a Jimmy Hoffa Day observance: "Use mechanical equipment if you have it.  Rent a bobcat!  Host a Hoffa Day bring-your-own-beer-and-shovel party for your friends.  Feel free to destroy your barn or your driveway.  Just don't come asking us to replace it, (like the FBI would).. we don't have any money!"

Even if Michiganders aren't physically able to dig a hole, the organizers of Jimmy Hoffa Day still see ways for them to contribute – and benefits for contributing.  "If you're not able to personally participate, we'd encourage you to call the FBI and tip them off that he's buried on your property.  You might just get lucky and end up with a new driveway or barn, compliments of the US government!  All these years later, Jimmy keeps helping the common man. What a legacy."

Organizers are also aware that, even with the widespread community involvement they expect the new holiday to generate, it may be a some time before Hoffa's remains are found.  But they're in it for the long haul, and encouraging supporters to take that perspective as well:  "Don't get discouraged if you don't find Jimmy on your first try.  The FBI has spent millions of dollars over almost forty years, and your success record is just as good as theirs."

the landscape of carnivals.

The work demonstrates the artists' diverse stylistic and thematic
approaches. Carlos Diaz, Professor of Photography at the College for
Creative Studies, offers photographs that are staged portraits of carnival
ride attendants as well as images of the carnival landscape. Bill Rauhauser,
Professor Emeritus of Photography at the College for Creative Studies,
presents "street photographs," finding his subject, as did Baudelaire's
flaneurs, while mingling with the crowd.  Seen together, the work provides
the viewer with a poignant glimpse into the lives of the people who inhabit
the world of the carnival. The show is curated by Mary McNichols, Ph.D.,
Professor of Art History at the College for Creative Studies. Biographical
information is attached.

The show will open in the Art House's upper gallery with a reception, 6-9
p.m., Friday, August 2. There will be a curator and artists' talk at 8 p.m.
the night of the reception. The show will continue through August 30 during
Art House gallery hours (Wednesdays-Saturdays, 1-5 p.m.). For additional
information, call 248-344-0497 or visit  "

SHOW REVIEW: Adam Ant in Denver CO by TracyK 7/24/2013

Posted on 07:28 by Unknown
With Adam Ant returning to Detroit next month we figured it would be a good idea to get ahead of the game and check out a show or two beforehand so we dusted off the ol MCB credit card and tagged a trusted friend out in Denver CO to cover the show and provide you with a little preview of whats to come at The Cathedral Theatre on August 27th

Thanks TK!

Special Assignment WORDS/IMAGES by TracyK
Adam Ant, Ogden Theatre Denver CO
 July 24th, 2013

Adam Ant, Post-Punk genius and Pop/New Wave artist, best known for his late 70’s-early 80’s music, tore up the stage at the historic Ogden Theatre in Denver, CO.  Kicked off in San Diego, his most expansive North American tour since 1995 is to promote ‘Adam Ant is the Blue Black Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter’ and follows on the heels of his successful European tour.

The latest album is a flagellant, intimate expose
of the singer/songwriter’s demons
both personal and professional.

While the album itself may have garnered mixed reviews, the live show is a raucous adventure spanning legendary hits and modern, introspective punk-ballads.  Adam hasn't lost his flair with signature nautical regalia and clean, powerful vocals.

The Good, the Mad and the Lovely Posse
stomp out an explosive performance
set to rocket Adam back to the top.

‘Marrying the Gunnner’s Daughter’ may have seemed a brooding opening to a brilliant set-list but there is no denying the energy and grace which flowed from the stage and set the crowd raving for more.  The packed house showed a strong mix of old-school fans and youthful hipsters all bathing in the charismatic presence of one of the U.K.’s best.   Adam shot about the stage and threw down his signature moves to woo the crowd and entice them to his world.

Overall a great live concert and one I wish I could experience again when he hits Detroit’s own Cathedral Theatre on August 27th 2013. - TracyK

Show Preview/Interview with Hiran Deraniyagala of Battlecross appearing at the Rockstar Mayhem Festival Sunday July 28 at DTE Energy Music Theatre

Posted on 10:30 by Unknown

Michigan metal band Battlecross is coming back to town on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour this coming Sunday, July 28th. Formed just under 10 years ago in the western Detroit suburb of Canon, Battlecross has been on of the hardest working metal bands this state has spawned. After putting in years of due diligence and paying their dues on the local circuit along with some regional tours, the band was signed to Metal Blade records in 2010 on the strength of their self-released album, "Push Pull Destroy". A re-recording of the album was made and renamed to "Pursuit of Honor" and quickly garnered massive airplay on Sirius XM's Liquid Metal show, with a few of the songs spending significant time in the "Devil's Dozen" list. Their latest release, "War of Will", was recently released and rose to #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums charts, and debuted at #134 on the Billboard 200, a testament to the power of this band and the music they've created.

With a breakthrough tour last year on the Tresspass America tour opening in support of Five Finger Death Punch, the band quickly made thousands of fans across the country, riding high on the wave of success of their freshman release. With their unrelenting approach to metal that blends several varieties of the genre together, they took the country by storm. This led them to get noticed by the Metallica camp which earned them a spot on the highly touted Orion Music & More Festival which just came through Detroit earlier this summer on Belle Isle. Handpicked by James Hetfield (Metallica) himself, they were invited to share the stage during the press conference in the days leading up to the festivals launch.

Battlecross on the Tresspass America Tour 2013

Having proven themselves on the big stages, they were again tapped to play on the upcoming Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival which was formed in 2008 and has been a summer staple for metal heads everywhere across the country. Tthey will be in Michigan this Sunday at the DTE Energy Music Theatre taking to the Jagermeister Stage at 2:20pm to celebrate with friends, family and fans alike in well deserved homecoming of triumphant success. Never ones to forget where they came from, the band members are always available to greet the fans after every show, humble in their success and eager to share their thanks to everyone who helped and support them along the way.

Tickets are still available for the show Sunday, so get yourself a pair or two, head up to DTE with some friends and support the PURE MICHIGAN METAL that is Battlecross!

Guitarist Hiran Deraniyagala gave me a call from the road today to talk about the bands success, the Mayhem tour to date, and what it means to be coming home to Detroit to play for the hometown crowd. Click the link below and give a listen!

About Battlecross:

With the mindset to create a sonic metal assault unlike any other, childhood friends, Tony Asta and Hiran Deraniyagala, set forth on the path to shred and abandoned the idea of following any trends. The guitar slinging duo brought an infused style of old school metal with dark elements of thrash and death metal and destined to find the right members.

Struggling for years to find reliable and dedicated members, the true formation of BATTLECROSSwas born in 2007 when Drummer Mike Kreger responded a want ad, and added a machine-like, brutal precision on the drums, and proved to be just the right match for Tony and Hiran’s mature and technical style of thrash. Bringing a whole new level of musicianship and intensity with his quick finger picking and tasty solos, Bassist Don Slater joined the group, bringing a skill and technique that impresses even the most prolific bassists. The thrash metal band was finally complete when popular area vocalist, Kyle "Gumby" Gunther joined the band. Known for his command of the stage and alternating deep growls with high pitched screams, Gumbypunishes the audience and inspires pits of rage.

Together, the five-piece create an unforgettable and energetic live show that decimates their audience with raw energy and persistence, that has earned a style of their own: "Blue Collar Thrash Metal", in reference to the hard-working, ‘never give up’ attitude of those who hail from the Motor City.

This reputation for technical talent, humility and kick ass live shows resonated throughout the regional metal scene and BATTLECROSS soon became a fan and band favorite. Sharing the stage with the likes of Dying Fetus, GWAR, Devil Driver, The Absence, Vital Remains, The Faceless and Metal Fests throughout the Midwest, BATTLECROSS began to bang heads nationally with a nod from MySpace-A Place for Metal’s 2008 ‘Best Unsigned Metal Band’contest, for being ‘Metal Sucks‘ worthy, Mike Kreger’s crowning as Sickdrummer.com & Zildjian’s ‘Sickest Dirt Fest Drummer‘ and featured on local, national and global metal radio.

…and after years of persistence and dedication, BATTLECROSS is celebrating their hard work and prolific future by signing with Metal Blade Records.

"We are extremely honored to join such a respected label and humbled by their belief in our music. We’re stoked to be part of a label that has a great roster of bands we all admire and respect!" says Tony. Hiran adds, "We understand the hard work and pavement pounding that is required of a Metal Blade band and we are going to work our asses’ off to show the world what we’re about"

Incorporating many elements of extreme thrash, death and tech metal, creating a precise blend of fist pumping brutality, intensity, and drive, BATTLECROSS satisfies both the tech-metal guru and the old-school die hard alike.

The band’s Metal Blade debut was released on August 2nd, 2011, followed by a tour that will bring a face melting thrash metal assault. The band’s Metal Blade debut was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Random Awesome Recording Studioin Bay City, MI and produced by BATTLECROSS and Josh Schroeder.
