Lenka Brings Happiness and Shadows to Pike Room this Thursday

Posted on 17:46 by Unknown

I hear tickets are going fast for Lenka’s show this Thursday at the Pike Room. It’s for a good reason too, because if you are looking for a little summertime happiness rolled together with good music you need to look no further than Lenka. Lenka is on the eastern leg of her North American tour and I spoke to her in Boston from her hotel room before getting ready to play there.  “The shows have been going great and we are all having a good time.”
Lenka explains to me that with her new album “Shadows” some hard decisions had to be made for her set list. “Some songs from the first and second albums have never been played live because I know which ones work well live. This time around I’ve added a few new ones. In fact, I leave the encore songs up to my audience to make sure I play what they want to hear.”
On the subject of her album “Shadows” I noticed it has a bit of a delicate and soft feeling to it, to which Lenka agreed with me “I wanted to make kind of a dreamy, lullaby album. I wanted it to sound different from my older work but I still wanted to retain whatever that “Lenka” thing is that I bring to my music while making it more uplifting and soothing.”
I told her I found the title “Shadows” could be perceived as dark and foreboding but she sees it differently, “I’ve always been fascinated by shadows as a metaphor. The idea is that they are a remnant of you and my songs are kind of the same thing. Even though it’s not a dark album, I think it is a night time record.”

One of the special things with past Lenka shows is her use of horns in her music giving it an authentic and organic ambience. “Horns are special to me because my Dad is a horn player and I learned how to play the horn at an early age so it’s something I wanted to keep with me. I use them in a different way, I go for a Burt Bacharach 60’s type of sound. However, this tour I wanted to do something different so I’ve brought a violin and cello along.”
Lenka is married and now with a son comes across as a very happy person so I wondered what could upset her. She replies, “I don’t like reading about hate and cruelty. A lot of my songs are ways of making me feel better about the world. I strive for happiness but every time I read the paper I get very angry and sad.”

Lenka’s latest video “Nothing Here But Love” from “Shadows” finds her body adorned with the pieces of a small, luscious town which is examined throughout the video. “We spent a couple weeks planning it out with a prosthetic person measuring up my body. On the day of the video shoot I was lying in position for 5 hours as pieces of the village were glued and airbrushed to my body. It was fun. It was worth it.”
She continues telling me how she enjoys artistically expressing her femininity, “I think the visual identity of a pop singer is very important, maybe nearly as important as the music. So I do put a fair amount of thought into creating that world. But when it comes to me wearing a pretty dress, I guess that’s just me being a girl wanting to wear a pretty dress.”

Lenka plays the Pike Room on Thursday, opening the show is Satellite an alternative rock quartet from Nashville, their sound  has been described as “Snow Patrol meets Kings of Leon.”

Show Review: Skylar Grey and TeamMate Pike Room July 17

Posted on 17:43 by Unknown

There are some shows I go to out of a sense that I am capturing wonder before it zips away into the mainstream. I get to see something with a small group of others that in a few years from now could be presented in front of thousands. After seeing a varied yet captivating show from Skylar Grey I feel she’s definitely a few steps closer on her climb to pop stardom.

The duo TeamMate opened the show with a rousing set of sing-along pop tunes that brought to mind popular alternative acts such as the Postal Service and fun. Their ep “Sequel” just came out and you can download the single “Love Is Love” for free.
Skylar Grey’s band took up a large amount of space of Pike Room’s small stage.  Her band was a guitarist, drummer (first time I’ve seen an enclosed drum set at Pike Room) and the other two of her stage musicians helped fill in the sound with laptops for added strings and vocals. They got the set started with a powerful instrumental that introduced Skylar to the stage.

Skylar’s first number had her seated in front of her piano and singing “Back from the Dead”. Her set then progressed to several songs off her album “Don't Look Down.” The songs vary from fun throwaway pop, angry rock and touching ballads. All the songs feature Skylar’s strong, pitch perfect vocals. Displaying some spunk in her performance she commanded a strong presence, playing acoustic guitar as well as a little street drumming. There were several times she reminded me of the brave, confrontational but also sweet music that Alanis Morissette brought to us back in the 90’s.

The strongest part of her 60-minute set was about halfway through where seated at her piano she played a beautiful version of “White Suburban” which flowed into her hip-hop collaborations, “I’m Coming Home,” “Love the Way You Lie” and “I Need A Doctor.” With hooks as strong as these I’m sure her phone must be ringing non-stop for more collaboration requests. Her set ended on a hopeful note with “Religion.” Then she stayed around a little longer to meet everyone that came out on this very hot night.

Show Preview: Dessa Pike Room, Thursday, May 16

Posted on 21:04 by Unknown

Dessa is one of those artists who constantly challenge themselves to expand and redefine the constructs that set out to confine their music. While you could refer to Dessa as a rap artist and part of the Doomtree collective, she is so much more than just that. Dessa has taken her vocal abilities and musical intellect to create hip hop that transcends categorization, adding strings, poetry and singing to her melancholic grooves. Her last tour was described as part rap and part cabaret. With her latest record “Castor, Twin,” Dessa continues smash down boundaries with new arrangements of 10 of her previously released songs. Songs like “The BeeKeeper” are haunting renditions that feature piano and strings. Her vocals are at full strength as she combines a narrative style to her singing reveals shades of Lou Reed in her darker moments. Dessa brings her unique set to the Pike Room this Thursday along with Aby Wolf and local hip hop favorites Passalacqua.

Show Preview: Purity Ring and Blue Hawaii at Pike Room Sat. May 4

Posted on 16:40 by Unknown
Saturday brings 2 uniquely similar and beautiful bands to Pike Room when Purity Ring and Blue Hawaii take to the stage. Let's start with what the bands share in common: both are from Canada and are young male-female duos. Both also have female vocalists with vocals that soar and haunt.

Purity Ring from Edmonton is Megan and Corin's sticky, synth band that take dream pop and drop it in a shaker with rattles and pops. What pours out is emotional pop on a tight-rope that is balanced by Megan's angelic vocals. Their latest release is the Soulja Boy cover of "Grammy" and comes as a surprise as stronger hip hop vibes and rap turn playful and dangerous.

Blue Hawaii, which has nothing to do with Elvis hails, from Montreal is Ra- and AG- who put together a spacious blend of acoustics and samples into meditative songs that can also tug at the heart. Their full length "Untogether" features 11 songs that carry along a fragile path of soft melodies and Ra- flowing vocals acting as your guide.
