Show Preview/Interview: Warbeast Friday night with Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals

Posted on 11:54 by Unknown

ROYAL OAK MUSIC THEATRE
AUGUST 9th
GET TICKETS HERE

Royal Oak is slated to get ripped a new one Friday night when Phil Anselmo brings his band and the veteran ensemble thrash band known as Warbeast along with one man industrial doom/drone metal act Author and Punisher to the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Warbeast vocalist Bruce Corbitt, longtime frontman of Rigor Mortis fame, chatted with me today from his hotel room on their day off after crushing The Intersection in Grand Rapids last night to talk about the state of thrash metal, horror movies, life on the road and touring in Detroit.

Interview with vocalist Bruce Corbitt(click for audio)

With the “retro-thrash” trend in full-swing, and hordes of bands trying to re-create “old school metal”, Texas monsters WARBEAST offer the real thing. Their music is not the result of careful study of 80’s thrash or classic metal; it just comes naturally because that is who they are.

The roots of WARBEAST are firmly entrenched in the legendary 80’s Texas underground metal scene. Vocalist Bruce Corbitt was the voice of speed metal splatter kings Rigor Mortis, who achieved major label success on Capitol Records in 1988. Guitarist Scott Shelby was part of the riff machine behind Gammacide, one of Texas most furious thrash exports. Drum tornado Joey Gonzalez provided blast beats and mayhem for Dallas death metal band Demonseed.

WARBEAST is touring in support of their new album Destroy, which you can buy now at www.thehousecorerecords.com. While you’re on the web, check out the band’s new werewolf-themed video for ‘Blood Moon’ here.

In the midst of their upcoming North American run, WARBEAST will make a stop at the annual GWAR-B-Q in Richmond, VA on August 17th at Hadad’s Water Park! Tickets for the GWAR-B-Q will be available June 6th at www.gwarbq.com and come in three different versions. Visit www.gwarbq.com/media for info on the ticket options and to view a brand new commercial for the event. Other bands performing this year at the GWAR-B-Q include Municipal Waste, Corrosion of Conformity, Pig Destroyer, Battlecross and more.

Dirt Fest Band Spotlight: Underneath It All And Interview With Vocalist Donny Spears

Posted on 09:03 by Unknown

Marching through the ashes of a broken society! Underneath the fake smiles and hidden motives of a man is his true self. UNDERNEATH IT ALL there is motive. This band speaks truth, they call it like they see it exposing the world through smashing guitars and heart pounding lyrics. Their form of expression is true to themselves, and those who can relate will be lifted and driven.

Thus reads the bio of the Detroit based metal band Underneath It All. Formed in 2010 on the outskirts of Detroit, they have fought their way to the forefront of the local metal circuit playing festivals such as Dirt Fest and Rockapalooza, as well as the litany of established rock clubs around the state. A hard working group of musicians drawn together by a common drive to express their feelings of rage and dismay at the breakdowns in society prevalent today, the message is brutal and straight to the point, "America! wake the fuck up!" This message is hammered home in their self-titled debut CD with track after track of blistering guitar and thundering undercurrent of bass and drums

Psychostick comes to Dirt Fest this Saturday and an interview with guitarist Joshua Key

Posted on 14:56 by Unknown
Humorcore Kings PSYCHOSTICK return to Dirt Fest.

This is not a sandwich, it's an interview! One of my favorite bands to see live, the antics of Psychostick and their legions of fans is well worth the price of admission to any show where they are on the bill. Blending a perverse, abstract and obtuse sense of humor and ear catching metal hooks they put on a spectacle of a a show that could be described as a stand up comedy metal act. With giant props ranging from tacos to rubber chickens, silly garb, groaning one liner jokes and an arsenal of songs, they deliver a one two punch of rocking comedy that leaves the audience wondering what the hell hit them. The band recently relocated to Chicago to build out a new studio space before embarking on their next sandwich domination tour of the states. Co-founder guitarist Joshua Key called me today to talk about their recent endeavors, how they like to inhale Portillos sausages, people who eat snot rags, The Machine Shop, Zombie burger and their hopes of seeing more boobs during their performance of Because Boobs. Make them happy at Dirt Fest, more boobs, less moobs!

Show Preview/Interview Hank Williams III @ The Machine Shop 08/31

Posted on 10:08 by Unknown

Hank Williams III takes no shit and gives no quarter when it comes to playing music on his terms. Son and grandson of the famous Hank Williams family, he eschewed his chance to follow in the footsteps of his family in what could have been a sure bet at success in the country music world. Sticking a middle finger up the collective ass of the Nashville sound, he struck out on his own to make his own legacy of music. From recording his own "Hellbilly" style music, playing in metal band Superjoint Ritual with former Pantera singer Phil Anselmo or his own band Assjack, or even going back to his roots with his own style of country, Hank3 lives and breathes on his own terms accepting no bullshit from anyone on his Hellbilly ride through life.

Interview with Hank Williams 3 (click for audio)

With a triple album release scheduled to be released on October 1st, double country album "Brothers of the 4 x 4" and punk album titled "A Fiendish Threat", Hank is packing up the bands and hitting the road in support of these new releases on August 24th. Citing The Machine Shop in Flint as a home away from home where he feels like he is among his northern redneck family, it is often one of the most rowdy and energetic shows on his tours. We spent a half hour on the phone talking about his new releases, The Machine Shop, inspirations, connecting with the fans, and the alleged rumor about him never playing Detroit again.

Get your tickets now while you can, this show WILL sell out and The Machine Shop is by far one of the best run and kick ass concert venues in the state of Michigan to catch a show at these days.

Great White Seen On The Detroit River Last Friday

Posted on 09:45 by Unknown

Detroit Rock City loves nothing more than a great rock and roll show, especially when it's free. Great White came chomping at the bit to the Rockin' On The Riverfront series behind the GM Resistance building last Friday as part of the free concert series put on every summer by a variety of business sponsors. With the sun setting behind the GM towers casting long shadows across the Detroit river, the people began to gather along the waterfront to take in a great night of rock and roll.

As boats moored along the river front near the stage, diners taking in coffee and dessert at Andiamo's sidewalk dining tables and throngs of pedestrians strolling in from the various parking structures, local band Tommy Marz opened up the night. An energetic act, Tommy and band were a perfect fit to open up the show with an abundance of vigor, and a variety of original and cover songs to engage the early audience. Check out their website for more info on them and support local music! www.tommymarz.com

Great White took the stage sharply at 9pm after a quick sound check and fine tuning of audio by long time producer, guitarist and keyboardist Michael Lardie. The attendance of the crowd had easily tripled in size by then with young and old in attendance, and notably a lot of fans in Great White shirts both old and new. With twelve studio albums under their belt since 1984's eponymous titled album, thousands of tours around the world from the smallest venue to the largest arena, the band brings a fine tuned show to whatever stage they play. With former XYZ singer Terry Ilous taking over frontman duties since 2010, founding member and lead guitarist Mark Kendall, drummer Audie Desbrow, bassist Scott Snyder and the aforementioned Michael Lardie comprising the latest incarnation of the band, they ripped through a varied catalog of their music spanning nearly 30 decades of great rock and roll leaving hardly anyone in the crowd sitting in their seats.

I also recently conducted an interview with Michael Lardie last week, check it out here if you missed it.

Metro Detroiters are working for the weekend of Aug. 9 to rock with Loverboy

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown

The 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront free concert series has metro Detroiters working for the weekend all summer, and on Friday, Aug. 9 Loverboy will take the stage in downtown Detroit. The concert, presented by Detroit’s #1 for Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX-FM, will rock the riverfront stage starting a 7:30 p.m. with opener Solid State.

In 1980 Loverboy introduced themselves to the world with their self-titled debut album. They quickly became one of America's and MTV's most popular rock bands. From 1980 through 1987 Loverboy garnered four multi-platinum albums and numerous international Gold albums. The band’s tours sold out arenas and stadiums nationwide. Their hit singles came one after another, and went on to become the anthems and party songs for an entire generation of rock concert-going fans. Loverboy's red leather pants, bandannas, and big rock sound defined the band's trademark image and high-energy live show.
Loverboy, driven by the powerful vocals of Mike Reno, the relentless rock groove of lead guitarist Paul Dean, bassist Scott Smith, keyboardist Doug Johnson and drummer Matt Frenette, built its reputation on-stage, bringing the energy from its radio hits to coliseum-rousing excitement.

With hits like “Turn Me Loose,” “Working for the Weekend,” “When it’s Over,” and “The Kid Is Hot Tonite,” the band’s albums went platinum in Canada and America.

Spanning six consecutive Friday evenings, 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront offers more than free concerts. Located in the heart of the city, between the GM Renaissance Center and Detroit River, the event has become a summer destination for dining and entertainment in Detroit. The final Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert is Aug. 16 with Night Ranger (Sister Christian, (You Can Still) Rock in America).

Admission to the concerts is always free and no tickets are necessary. Viewing space is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets, but outside food, beverages and coolers are not permitted. In addition, boaters on the Detroit River are welcome to anchor near the riverfront and enjoy the shows from the water.

Andiamo Detroit Riverfront will provide refreshments and food concessions at several locations across the plaza. Andiamo Detroit Riverfront and Joe Muer Seafood will accept dinner reservations before and after the concert and both restaurants offer outdoor patios overlooking the Detroit River and the Rockin’ on the Riverfront stage.

Convenient parking is available for $5 per vehicle, starting at 5 p.m., at the GM surface lot at the intersection of St. Antoine and Atwater streets, adjacent to the GM Renaissance Center.

The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is offering an incredible package during the concerts. The Marriott-Andiamo Romance Retreat package includes a four-course dinner at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront and overnight accommodations at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. For reservations call (888) 313-5001 and mention promotional code WN9 or visit The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center .

Listen to 94.7 WCSX each week during Rockin’ on the Riverfront for a chance to win VIP seats, a catered dinner by Andiamo, and meet and greet opportunities with the bands. Additionally, new to the event this year is Veterans Row. Veterans are invited to log onto www.wcsx.com, fill out an online form sharing where he or she served or is currently serving and WCSX will pull weekly winners to sit in the 94.7 WCSX Veterans Row for each Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert this summer.

Fans are invited to watch FOX 2 in the Morning every week to enter a FOX 2 EXPOSED contest for a chance to win a VIP prize package, which includes two (2) VIP access wristbands and lanyards with front-row seats, dinner for two (2) at Andiamo Detroit Riverfront in the Rockin’ on the Riverfront VIP section (the evening of the concert only), overnight accommodations for two (2) at The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center (the evening of the concert only, and excludes the July 26, 2013 concert), free parking in the Beaubien Garage located on Beaubien Street (the evening of the concert only), WCSX 94.7 FM freebies, and a band meet-and-greet (if available). To enter, access the online contest entry form on MyFoxDetroit.com and follow instructions.

In addition to Chevrolet, the 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert series is sponsored in partnership with Detroit’s #1 for Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX-FM, Quicken Loans, McDonald’s After Midnight, Metro PCS, and WJBK FOX 2.

Show Preview/Interview Great White/Michael Lardie interview

Posted on 10:50 by Unknown
Celebrating over 30 years of rock and roll success, Great White returns to the Motor City as part of the 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront summer concert series. Riding high on the success of their 12th studio album "Elation" which performed well on music charts around the world, they bring their timeless rock and roll sound back to the Detroit for a FREE concert.

Featuring founder Mark Kendall (guitar), and 28-year-veterans Michael Lardie (guitar, keyboards) and Audie Desbrow (drums), they are joined by lead singer Terry Ilous and bassist Scott Snyder. Great White emerged unscathed from late 2011 band member changes. Best known for the 1989 smash “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” Great White’s worldwide sales are approaching 10 million. Their song arsenal also includes “Rock Me,” “Save Your Love,” “The Angel Song,” “Mistabone” and more!

Elation is just the recording of what live audiences will see and hear as a band with a new mission. “This is a new birth of the band,” Desbrow says. “I wanted to call the album ‘Tabula Rasa’ which means rebirth, but we went for ‘Elation’ because of the euphoria in the atmosphere. It’s a fresh and healthier start than ever before. I’m like a kid in a candy store.”

Great White - (I've Got) Something For You (From Elation)

Guitarist, keyboardist and producer Michael  Lardie spent 15 minutes on the phone with me before their gig in New Jersey to discuss all things Great White.

Show preview/interview: Chris Wyse of The Cult @ The Fillmore Detroit August 8th, 2013

Posted on 14:11 by Unknown

Bassist and vocalist Chris Wyse is no stranger to the music scene, having performed and recorded tracks with everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Mick Jagger to The Cult, as well as finding time to found and front his own band Owl back in 2007. Hailing from Queens, NY, his early years were heavily influenced by his Irish heritage listening to his parents albums, before discovering the likes of Kiss and Led Zeppelin in school. Inspired by Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, he took to bass as his instrument of choice and quickly developed his own unique style of play and sound that found him being profiled in Guitar Player Magazine at age 17. Chris took some time to speak with me over the phone today from Seattle, WA where he will be playing at the Showbox Sodo this evening with The Cult. Click the link below for the audio interview.

Interview with Chris Wyze The Cult and Owl

Owl: The Right Thing

Chris is headed out on tour with The Cult on their Electric 13 tour, where they will be playing their 1987 Rick Rubin-produced landmark album Electric in its entirety for the first time ever. On the Electric 13 trek, The Cult will play their 1987 Rick Rubin-produced landmark album Electric in its entirety for the first time ever. Each tour stop will feature a first set of the platinum-selling Electric boasting standouts like ‘Love Removal Machine,’ ‘Wild Flower’ and ‘Lil’ Devil’ and a second set highlighting The Cult’s 30-year catalogue of hits. The Cult is set to release new material in 2014 to follow-up to their 2012 album Weapon of Choice, and a double album called Electric Peace is due out July 30th.

Great White to rock Detroit riverfront Friday Aug. 2nd.

Check back later this week when we post an interview with Great White Guitarist Michael Lardie!

The 2013 Chevrolet Rockin’ on the Riverfront free summer concert series will feature L.A. hard rockers Great White on Friday, Aug. 2. The concert, presented by Detroit’s #1 for Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX-FM, will rock the riverfront stage starting a 7:30 p.m. with opener Artificial Agent of Detroit.

Great White has been churning out memorable songs since the early 80's, when Jack Russell and Mark Kendall joined forces and adopted the blues-based sound that went against the era's glam rock grain.

Great White quickly attracted attention on the L.A. club scene. Their independently released EP Out of the Night sold 20,000 copies and got local airplay. Great White was snapped up by EMI America, which issued the eponymous Great White in 1984. That year, the band embarked on their first European tour with Whitesnake, and segued to a 5-month U.S. arena run with Judas Priest.

The 1987 album Once Bitten, which featured the hit tracks "Rock Me," "Lady Red Light," and "Save Your Love," went platinum. Their next album Twice Shy, which featured the Top 5 hit "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," more than doubled that tally.

Upcoming shows include:

Aug. 9: Loverboy (Working for the Weekend, Turn Me Loose)

Aug. 16: Night Ranger (Sister Christian, (You Can Still) Rock in America)

Pictures: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and Black Stone Cherry @ DTE Energy Music Theatre 07/23/2013

Posted on 07:25 by Unknown
Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company celebrate significant 40th anniversaries in 2013, with Lynyrd Skynyrd having released their debut album on August 13, 1973 and Bad Company being formed that same year. While the pair have shared the stage and Paul Rodgers has toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company and Skynyrd have never toured as co-headliners together.

Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, Lynyrd Skynyrd has maintained a tremendous legacy that began over 40 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, and continues with the recently released Last Of A Dying Breed (Roadrunner). The band's career was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, and then subsequently faced adversity through the losses of Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they rock on. With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations. The current line-up features Gary Rossington (Guitar), Johnny Van Zant (Vocals), Rickey Medlocke (Guitar), Mark "Sparky" Matejka (Guitar), Michael Cartellone (Drums), Johnny Colt (Bass), Peter Keys (Keyboards), Dale Krantz Rossington- Honkettes (Backing Vocals) and Carol Chase-Honkettes (Backing Vocals).

Bad Company were dubbed a super-group upon the band's formation due to the union of Free's Paul Rodgers (Vocals / Multi-Instrumentalist) with Mott The Hoople's Mick Ralphs (Guitar) plus King Crimson's Boz Burrell (Bass) and Free's Simon Kirke (Drums). Over the next nine years, the band released a string of six albums, yielding international hits "Can't Get Enough," "Bad Company," "Feel Like Makin' Love," and many others penned by the main songwriters Paul Rodgers and Mick Ralphs. Original members Rodgers, Ralphs, and Kirke will be joined by guitarist Howard Leese and bassist Todd Ronning (from Paul Rodgers solo band). Original bassist Boz Burrell passed away in 2006.

Bad Company has inspired many of today's musicians. Most notably, Metal band Five Finger Death Punch who scored a #1 Active Rock hit with a cover of the song "Bad Company". Since 2001, the band has only played 11 isolated performances, and has not staged a tour of The United States until now. In front of the run, Rodgers shares, "When Mick and I formed the band in the 70's we were amazed at the instant success. It didn't hurt to have Led Zeppelin behind us, and we wrote some decent songs that still resonate. This one is for fans."

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Johnny Van Zant offers, "Every member of Skynyrd has been fans of Bad Company from the get go. Personally, Paul is one of my favorite rock singers. We have a deep appreciation for Bad Company’s music and look forward to being on the road with them and sharing the stage.” Paul Rodgers reveals, "The Skynyrds and I go back to the 70's and the days and nights at the Hyatt House on Sunset in LA aka the Riot House. In the 90's the band introduced me to my wife Cynthia, and that's why I am so damned happy and healthy these years."

Special guests and Kentucky-bred hard rockers, Black Stone Cherry were the openers on The 40 Tour. Their music has been described as Southern-fried hard rock about everything from being proud of where you come from and true to who you are.
