----AN EXHIBITION SHOWCASING IMAGES FROM JENNY RISHER’S NEW BOOK,----

DETROIT – The Detroit Historical Society invites you to the opening event for a new exhibition featuring photography from Jenny Risher’s new book, HeartSoul Detroit: Conversations on the Motor City on Friday, July 12 from 6 – 10 p.m. in the Community Gallery at the Detroit Historical Museum.
Among the local legends featured in the book currently slated to attend the event include TV anchor Bill Bonds, former Detroit Lion Mel Farr, boxing champion Thomas “The Hit Man” Hearns, former columnist and boxing manager Jackie Kallen, Grammy-winning songwriter Allee Willis, and Motown artists Martha Reeves and Mary Wilson.
Doors and bar open at 6 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting at 7 p.m. and Detroit-inspired food, drinks, and book-signing from 7 - 10 p.m. Advance tickets are $35 or $75 with a copy of HeartSoul Detroit included. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door for $40; pre-purchasing tickets is recommended due to limited space. Advance ticket deadline: Monday, July 8, 2013. For more information, please call (313) 833-1980 or visit www.detroithistorical.org.
The HeartSoul Detroit exhibit then opens to the public Saturday, July 13 and runs through Sunday, September 29, 2013.
Detroit. The Motor City. Motown. By any name, the city “on the strait” that Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded in 1701 has arisen to become one of the most influential, volatile, intriguing and inspiring locales on the planet. From the rise of the auto industry to the phenomenal success of Motown Records to the Grande Ballroom scene that fostered some of the most influential musicians in the history of rock ’n’ roll, it can’t be denied: An uncommon number of amazing people have called Detroit home.
This exhibit serves as the companion to the book and features photographs by Jenny Risher, raw interview footage and memorabilia. HeartSoul Detroit presents 50 of the most influential, successful, fascinating and beloved Detroiters. From super-athletes like Nicklas Lidström, Barry Sanders, Al Kaline and Thomas Hearns, and writers such as Elmore Leonard, Mitch Albom and John Sinclair, to internationally admired musicians like Smokey Robinson, Jack White, Eminem and Martha Reeves and business visionaries such as Berry Gordy, Lee Iacocca and Bill Ford Jr., Heart Soul Detroit showcases the men and women who helped put The Motor City on the map.
A portion of proceeds from sales of the book benefit Focus: HOPE. To learn more about the book, visit http://www.heartsouldetroit.com/.
The Community Gallery is supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time. Parking in the Museum’s lot is $5 at all times. Group tour pricing and information is available by calling (313) 833-1733. Permanent exhibits include the famous Streets of Old Detroit, the Allesee Gallery of Culture, Kid Rock Music Lab, Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad, Detroit: The “Arsenal of Democracy,” Frontiers to Factories, America’s Motor City, and The Glancy Trains. For more information, call the Museum at (313) 833-1805 or check out our website at www.detroithistorical.org.
