Zombie Con Comes Our Way!

Posted on 18:33 by Unknown

It is no startling revelation that zombies are kind of a big deal these days. Between the Walking Dead and the latest new zombie movie that hits the theaters every month, zombies have established themselves as more than just the scare in a film, they have become their own genre. So it is only fitting we have a convention coming our way solely devoted these shambling, flesh-eating icons. Brought to you by Motion Picture Institute, Zombie Con (Z-Con) is a two-day event that brings together Zombie, and Horror Fans, Creators, Artists, Novelists, Film Makers at Michigan’s premiere film school; MPI at 2040 Crooks road in Troy, MI. –August 17th and 18th. The convention includes a two-day film festival with the World Premiere of Anchor Bay’s zombie vs. robots epic Battle of the Damned not due in theaters until 2014. Z-Con will also have the Michigan Sneak Preview of the award winning documentary Birth of the Living Dead about the making of Romero’s Night of the Living Dead being shown ahead of its worldwide release from First Run Features. Synapse Films are screening the critically acclaimed Japanese zombie film Undertaker that has never been shown in the US. Z-Con also has Special Guests like Courtney Gains (Malachi from Children of the Corn). Courtney can currently be seen in the zombie role playing flick Mimesis: Night of the Living Dead.
Z-Con is also celebrating the 35th anniversary of the original Dawn of the Dead with stars David Emge and Scott Reiniger in attendance. There will be panel discussions with Rue Morgue magazine’s Editor-In-Chief Dave Alexander, Film Journalist Mike White (the Projection Booth, ParaCinema), author David Hayes (Cinema Head Cheese) and Jonathan James (Daily Dead) and many others. There will be a special fx seminar on How To Make a Zombie by Creature Division FX (28 Days, Crazies),  and the much talked about Ms. Zombie Con Pin Up Gal Contest that will be judged by radio personalities. And for those who like to dress up and play zombie there is a Zombie role playing game based off the hit Anchor Bay zombie film MIMESIS: Night of the Living Dead. One of the stages at MPI will be converted into a haunted attraction where guests who come as their favorite screen zombie get to wander the halls interacting with unsuspecting patrons. The Con will feature art work by renowned zombie artists Gary Pullin (Rue Morgue), Mark Hammermeister (Walking Dead) Matt Busch (Star Wars) and more. Tickets to Zombie Con are available in advance via Event Brite. Check out the official Z-Con website and Facebook event page  for more announcements.

Are You Ready to Travel Back to 1993?

Posted on 07:51 by Unknown
Resurrected Detroit metal band Raw Image will perform its first official live show in twenty years next Saturday, August 17, at the The Ritz in Warren.

Raw Image brilliantly mixes heavy and catchy riffs with melodies that rival the work of more well known acts such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Singer Eric Johnson belts out vocals that make you wonder why he isn't internationally known, while guitarists Mike Paytas and Mick Morris come at you with a dual attack that features shredding, harmonies, and riffs that take you back to the glory years of heavy metal. Not to be forgotten is drummer Lenny Doss who, after all these years, still attacks you with a battery that rivals his more well-known (and younger) counterparts.

For the metal inclined, this is a show not to be missed. Raw Image holds down the old-school local metal sound with the best of them. Also, word on the street is that there may be some Toxic Waltz(ing) going down. Bring your earplugs!

Wild Bill Ketelhut provides the "blog" to this anti-blog

Wild At Heart

After seeing the new film by director Gordon Green, “Prince Avalanche” (loosely-based on the 2011 Icelandic film “Either Way”), I can’t help but thinking of the Talking Heads song ‘Road To Nowhere’ as this film really is designed not to really end up anyplace. Gordon really impressed me with his film “George Washington” and I did enjoy the quirky “Pineapple Express” and this film falls somewhere inbetween.

The film introduces us to Alvin (Paul Rudd) and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance (Emile Hirsch) as they leave the pressures of the city to work a summer job mulching gardens that had been ravaged by wildfires. Cinematographer Tim Orr does a good job bringing out some interesting landscapes as the two men, forced by the desolation of their location come to learn more about each other and themselves. There are no big issues here being dealt with, just the common every day concerns that we find ourselves dealing with every day.

We have a couple of oddball characters that occasionally break into their world from a truck driver who shares his liquor with them to the woman looking for her pilots license in her burned out house, but they are more distractions as the story itself should really be the bonding of the two leads. Alvin is the more adult yet meditative man while Lance is more the insecure, childish character. This is the appeal as they try to find common ground while rebuilding this area back up.

The film is very low key in its humor so don’t go in expecting the same energy as “Pineapple Express” but more like films as “Greenberg” or “Henry Poole Is Here”. The movie uses the introspection of their lives interlaced with subtle humor to bring more a smile than a heart-wrenching laugh.

However, this film really relies on the actors truly bringing it home. Paul Rudd is truly amazing in the film and really embodies his character bringing out Alvin’s as sometimes awkward, funny, meditative and unsure of himself. It is a nice understated performance from Rudd that is unfortunately not held together enough by Hirsch who truly seems unable to fully capture his characters slacker roots. That is not to say there are not some truly touching and funny moments here, but the film doesn’t really separate itself from similar, and better, films.

If you are looking for a film to just chill out to, this might be right up your alley, but if the films mentioned above bore you then I cannot recommend this for you. However, if those films are your cup of tea, then sit back and enjoy. I would give the film a C+.

Explosions In The Sky provides a nice soundtrack as the perfect band to score a film like this.

"Prince Avalanche opens at Landmark’s Main Art Theatre on August 9th.

Friday, August 9th, at the Garden Bowl
    FREE

Victoria BC quintet Aidan Knight and their namesake songwriter who will make their Detroit debut, Aug. 9th at the Garden Bowl in support of their U.S. debut album, Small Reveal, which arrived in stores July 23rd.  Small Reveal is a gorgeous and lush album that swoons and swells around Knight's captivating baritone.  As a songwriter, Knight explores the minute details of life, and the middle stories, plunging the listener into the midst of the lives of others.  The album presents the themes of inward thought and creativity, escapism, longing for success, and belonging.  Small Reveals was written over a fortnight in a rural cabin in British Columbia, then recorded in ten days in ten different locations throughout Victoria, with producer Jonathan Anderson, each providing a unique charm and character to the song.  Released in Canada in late 2012, the album garnered critical acclaim across the country.  The nationally syndicated Sun Media stated, “Knight’s delicately restless self-explorations resonate on a much larger level…brilliantly executed.”  While Under The Radar declared, “Their songs have impressive depth for such humble scale… Shearwater fans should instantly find their appeal.”

Show Preview/Interview: Warbeast Friday night with Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals

    Posted on 11:54 by Unknown

    ROYAL OAK MUSIC THEATRE
    AUGUST 9th
    GET TICKETS HERE

Royal Oak is slated to get ripped a new one Friday night when Phil Anselmo brings his band and the veteran ensemble thrash band known as Warbeast along with one man industrial doom/drone metal act Author and Punisher to the Royal Oak Music Theatre. Warbeast vocalist Bruce Corbitt, longtime frontman of Rigor Mortis fame, chatted with me today from his hotel room on their day off after crushing The Intersection in Grand Rapids last night to talk about the state of thrash metal, horror movies, life on the road and touring in Detroit.

Interview with vocalist Bruce Corbitt(click for audio)

With the “retro-thrash” trend in full-swing, and hordes of bands trying to re-create “old school metal”, Texas monsters WARBEAST offer the real thing. Their music is not the result of careful study of 80’s thrash or classic metal; it just comes naturally because that is who they are.

The roots of WARBEAST are firmly entrenched in the legendary 80’s Texas underground metal scene. Vocalist Bruce Corbitt was the voice of speed metal splatter kings Rigor Mortis, who achieved major label success on Capitol Records in 1988. Guitarist Scott Shelby was part of the riff machine behind Gammacide, one of Texas most furious thrash exports. Drum tornado Joey Gonzalez provided blast beats and mayhem for Dallas death metal band Demonseed.

WARBEAST is touring in support of their new album Destroy, which you can buy now at www.thehousecorerecords.com. While you’re on the web, check out the band’s new werewolf-themed video for ‘Blood Moon’ here.

In the midst of their upcoming North American run, WARBEAST will make a stop at the annual GWAR-B-Q in Richmond, VA on August 17th at Hadad’s Water Park! Tickets for the GWAR-B-Q will be available June 6th at www.gwarbq.com and come in three different versions. Visit www.gwarbq.com/media for info on the ticket options and to view a brand new commercial for the event. Other bands performing this year at the GWAR-B-Q include Municipal Waste, Corrosion of Conformity, Pig Destroyer, Battlecross and more.

Dirt Fest Band Spotlight: Underneath It All And Interview With Vocalist Donny Spears

    Posted on 09:03 by Unknown

Marching through the ashes of a broken society! Underneath the fake smiles and hidden motives of a man is his true self. UNDERNEATH IT ALL there is motive. This band speaks truth, they call it like they see it exposing the world through smashing guitars and heart pounding lyrics. Their form of expression is true to themselves, and those who can relate will be lifted and driven.

Thus reads the bio of the Detroit based metal band Underneath It All. Formed in 2010 on the outskirts of Detroit, they have fought their way to the forefront of the local metal circuit playing festivals such as Dirt Fest and Rockapalooza, as well as the litany of established rock clubs around the state. A hard working group of musicians drawn together by a common drive to express their feelings of rage and dismay at the breakdowns in society prevalent today, the message is brutal and straight to the point, "America! wake the fuck up!" This message is hammered home in their self-titled debut CD with track after track of blistering guitar and thundering undercurrent of bass and drums

    Grab Yerself Some Atmosphere!

    Posted on 16:52 by Unknown

Occasionally I like to go out to a place that is filled with friendly, smiling people, moving to and fro,  enjoying what I consider as really good music.  It’s those last few words that is the sticky part because what I consider good music I don’t hear often enough at the local clubs. Fortunately, there’s Atmosphere, a monthly dining and dance experience is happening this Saturday, Aug. 10 at Sakana Sushi Lounge in Ferndale.
    .
Brought to you from the gang that brings the sweet and delightful Strangeways Radio, Atmosphere is a night of dance music from all the best genres including Synth-pop, Indie, Britpop and Electronica. Effervescent DJs Zumby and Pinknoise will be providing the tunes, turning the back half of Sakana to a glorious dance club . There will be an Adam Ant and Patti Smith ticket giveaways and $3 drink specials. Come a little early to get a good parking spot and enjoy some sushi, things start hoppin’ around 10pm.

Psychostick comes to Dirt Fest this Saturday and an interview with guitarist Joshua Key

    Posted on 14:56 by Unknown
Humorcore Kings PSYCHOSTICK return to Dirt Fest.

This is not a sandwich, it's an interview! One of my favorite bands to see live, the antics of Psychostick and their legions of fans is well worth the price of admission to any show where they are on the bill. Blending a perverse, abstract and obtuse sense of humor and ear catching metal hooks they put on a spectacle of a a show that could be described as a stand up comedy metal act. With giant props ranging from tacos to rubber chickens, silly garb, groaning one liner jokes and an arsenal of songs, they deliver a one two punch of rocking comedy that leaves the audience wondering what the hell hit them. The band recently relocated to Chicago to build out a new studio space before embarking on their next sandwich domination tour of the states. Co-founder guitarist Joshua Key called me today to talk about their recent endeavors, how they like to inhale Portillos sausages, people who eat snot rags, The Machine Shop, Zombie burger and their hopes of seeing more boobs during their performance of Because Boobs. Make them happy at Dirt Fest, more boobs, less moobs!

Check out "wheels" new music from Bars of Gold

BARS OF GOLD (EX BEAR VS. SHARK) ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM WHEELS OUT OCTOBER 28

    HEAR "COFFEE WITH PELE" HERE:
    http://noisey.vice.com/blog/listen-to-bars-of-golds-debut-single-coffee-with-pele

Detroit based Bars of Gold, the raucous indie rock quintet consisting of former Bear vs. Shark front man Marc Paffi and drummer Brandon Moss, have announced their new LP Wheels, due out October 28th on indie imprint Belly Ache Records.  Recorded in Detroit by Chris Koltay (Akron/Family, The Dirtbombs, Talib Kweli, Tyvek, Human Eye) at High Bias Recordings,
Wheels consists of ten tracks of bright laden guitars and warm driving basslines brought home by the haunting growls of Paffi's unique vibrato, creating an aggressive and passionate 40 minutes that captures the energy of their notoriously chaotic live shows.

Rounded off by members of the improvisational, freak-out-jazz instrumental outfit, Wildcatting (Scott Iulianelli, Ben Audette, Nick Jones, as well as Moss), Wheels is a record more than two years in the making, as a result of the factors that inform its own conceptual theme balancing of band life with family life in spite of the wide geographic distance between the band members. Much of Wheels was written in a remote northwestern Pennsylvania cabin equipped with zero amenities.  The band would travel from Detroit with a generator to power equipment, in order to meet drummer, Brandon Moss who was traveling from Washington DC.

Show Preview/Interview Hank Williams III @ The Machine Shop 08/31

    Posted on 10:08 by Unknown

Hank Williams III takes no shit and gives no quarter when it comes to playing music on his terms. Son and grandson of the famous Hank Williams family, he eschewed his chance to follow in the footsteps of his family in what could have been a sure bet at success in the country music world. Sticking a middle finger up the collective ass of the Nashville sound, he struck out on his own to make his own legacy of music. From recording his own "Hellbilly" style music, playing in metal band Superjoint Ritual with former Pantera singer Phil Anselmo or his own band Assjack, or even going back to his roots with his own style of country, Hank3 lives and breathes on his own terms accepting no bullshit from anyone on his Hellbilly ride through life.

Interview with Hank Williams 3 (click for audio)

With a triple album release scheduled to be released on October 1st, double country album "Brothers of the 4 x 4" and punk album titled "A Fiendish Threat", Hank is packing up the bands and hitting the road in support of these new releases on August 24th. Citing The Machine Shop in Flint as a home away from home where he feels like he is among his northern redneck family, it is often one of the most rowdy and energetic shows on his tours. We spent a half hour on the phone talking about his new releases, The Machine Shop, inspirations, connecting with the fans, and the alleged rumor about him never playing Detroit again.

Get your tickets now while you can, this show WILL sell out and The Machine Shop is by far one of the best run and kick ass concert venues in the state of Michigan to catch a show at these days.

After more than eight years of global touring, seven solo albums on labels such as Pretty Lights Music, Old Tacoma Records, Hefty Records, and Mush, Eliot Lipp's status as an electronic music pioneer is known to scene experts and weekend warriors alike. It is a widely known fact that Lipp is an avid connoisseur of vintage analogue gear.

So much so that you would be in the minority if you caught a show or picked up an album that did not incorporate elements from his huge vintage collection of electronic instruments. This, in addition to Lipp's eclectic musical taste is one of the reasons why his music is so unique, yet so relevant.

Film Series @the Detroit Historical Museum

    Posted on 07:58 by Unknown
The summer is nearing its end and the Detroit Historical Society continues to bring back the most popular films from its monthly film series. So, if you missed out the first time or want to see them again, stop by the Detroit Historical Museum in August for the Summer Film Series.

The Detroit Historical Society’s Film Series screens documentaries that cover a range of Detroit history subjects. Films are screened at 1 p.m. on select Saturdays and Sundays, and are free to the public. The Summer Film Series in August features three of our most popular recent films, including:

    • “The Story of Willow Run” Exploring the Willow Run B-24 Bomber Plant and the history of Henry Ford’s involvement with aircraft production needs for the coming World War, “The Story of Willow Run” is the story of how the sprawling Willow Run plant was rolling out one B-24 every 55 minutes, 24 hours a day.  This film is an original, 1945 black and white documentary, produced by Ford Motor Company. Scheduled screenings are on the weekends of August 3-4 and August 24-25. Run time is 35 minutes.

    • “The Rouge,” directed by John Owens and produced by Kingberry Productions, was produced in 1997 for WDIV-TV Local 4. The film features early archival footage, rare photographs and interviews that help tell the intriguing story of one of the most famous industrial workplaces ever. From its first years as a model of integration for its time, to Ford Motor Company’s using cruel force to crush organized labor, the Rouge plant indelibly shaped the history of Detroit and the world. “The Rouge” screens on two weekends, August 10-11, and August 31-September 1. Run time is 46 minutes.

    • “Borderline,” a 1997 Emmy Winner, explores the story of 8 Mile Road. No other road in Michigan evokes a response like the one you get when you mention 8 Mile. From topless dancers and the neighborhood groups that battle them, to storefront preachers and the homeless people they minister, 8 Mile remains our area’s most notorious boundary. This event will include a visit from the film’s producer, Gary Glaser, who will provide an introduction and answer questions following each screening. Screenings are scheduled for the weekend of August 17-18. The film runs 30 minutes. NOTE: Viewer discretion is advised; some material in this film is not suitable for children.

The Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time. Parking in the Museum’s lot is $5 at all times. Group tour pricing and information is available by calling (313) 833-1733. Permanent exhibits include the famous Streets of Old Detroit, the Allesee Gallery of Culture, Kid Rock Music Lab, Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad, Detroit: The “Arsenal of Democracy,” Frontiers to Factories, America’s Motor City, and The Glancy Trains. For more information, call the Museum at (313) 833-1805 or check out our website at www.detroithistorical.org.
