UPCOMING: Ulan Bator - Martin Bisi plus special guests SPACE BAND at Trinosophes 5/11

Posted on 10:07 by Unknown

Get there early for MCB fav SPACE BAND which is a one of a kind experimental sound creation

ULAN BATOR is a French experimental post-rock band founded in 1993 by Amaury Cambuzat and Olivier Manchion. They create lengthy instrumental music with influence from industrial and krautrock. Founder Amaury Cambuzat is also a member of German band Faust.

Martin Bisi, a New York-based indie rock performer, record producer, engineer and label owner, has been at the crossroads of indie, punk, avant garde, noir/cabaret rock, hip hop and electronic music since the early 80's in New York City.
Bisi's upcoming release is titled Ex Nihilo (Burger Records) - Latin for "Out Of / From Nothing." It will be released later this year. A darker tone dominates the record compared to his last couple of releases - Ex Nihilo is an exploration of the psyche, and catharsis, with a ritualistic sensibility reminiscent of his 1988 album Creole Mass.
At the OAO recording studio he started in Brooklyn 1981 with the help of Brian Eno, Martin Bisi has realized albums by Sonic Youth, Swans, Material/Bill Laswell, Boredoms, Dresden Dolls, Cop Shoot Cop, John Zorn, Africa Bambaataa, Herbie Hancock's Rockit, White Zombie, Foetus, Helmet, Unsane, Serena Maneesh,

Check out Ulan Bator and Martin Bisi at Trinosophes (1464 Gratiot Ave) Saturday, May 11 at 9pm.

SATURDAY 5/11 - Geotheism: Contemporary Art Explores Architecture and Religion - North End Studios to Host Exhibition Featuring Local and International Artists Chris Adams, Pierre Chaumont and Marco Terenzi

Geotheism: Contemporary Art Explores

Architecture and Religion

North End Studios to Host Exhibition Featuring Local and International

Artists Chris Adams, Pierre Chaumont and Marco Terenzi

North End Studios is pleased to announce an exhibition entitled Geotheism featuring the artwork of

Pierre Chaumont, Marco Terenzi and Chris Adams on Saturday May 11th, 2013. The gallery will open to

the public at 7 p.m until 1 a.m.

Chaumont's installation, entitled Paturon Chimere, questions the relation between belief and

religion. "Throughout this entire process, I am asking questions to both the religious and atheists,

because they both believe in something," explained Chaumont, a 2011 graduate of Université du

Québec à Montréal with a Bachelor of Fine Art and Media. Paturon will also feature an engaging

performance ritual to take place at 9 p.m. See more of his work at pierrechaumont.com.

Detroit native Chris Adams' De‐tropolis explores the fictional portrayal of a city that is empty and

abandoned, using places and things to construct the atmosphere. "The atmosphere my work created is

strange, eerie, and somewhat sinister," says Adams, regarding his photographic prints. His work is not

intended to devalue or promote political awareness of any kind towards Detroit's often pre‐conceived

reputation. Chris graduated in 2012 with a degree in Digital Video Production from Washtenaw

Community College and publishes a selection of his images at chrisadamsimagery.net.

College for Creative Studies graduate and architectural artist Marco Terenzi will also be featuring his

distinctive distressed architectural works. Terenzi describes his work as focusing on the relationship

between industry and nature. Marco added, "I am inspired by current events that I abstract to create

work that documents this time in history from my perspective."

Learn more about Marco at www.marcoterenzi.tumblr.com

Live music by special guest Solid Liquid will be performed throughout the evening. The gallery will

remain open until 1 a.m.

Geotheism opens on May 11 and will be open by appointment only through the 15th. Suggested

donation: $5. For more information about the exhibit, please visit http://bit.ly/geotheism.

About the gallery:

North End Studios (NES) is dedicated to the empowerment of the current and future generations of

"THE ROUGE" MAY 11 & 12 AT THE DETROIT HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward Ave. (NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit, is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all, all the time. Show Review: Purity Ring, Blue Hawaii, the Crofoot Sat May 4th

Posted on 19:01 by Unknown
Sometimes I really am clueless. I had wrongly assumed Purity Ring was my precious little gem of a band that was flying under everyone else's radar screen. Sure, I had heard "Lofticries" and "Fineshrine" played quite a bit on Sirius Alt Nation but what does that really add up to? I even went as far as to double check the website to confirm the show was really at Crofoot and not upstairs at the smaller Pike Room. So imagine my surprise when I walk up to Crofoot to find a line wrapped around the building and much more already inside. From the looks of the crowd it appears me and at least a few other hundred people in the area are well aware of Purity Ring.

As the crowd continued to fill in every crevice of the hall a mix of down and dirty hip hop permeated the room. I found a spot on the balcony to watch the opening act Blue Hawaii. Blue Hawaii is the other duo from Canada playing this night and in a word they were astounding. Forewarning the crowd they were going to start slow then go real hard, they executed their plan perfectly with an opener that was brilliantly still. Towards the middle of their set they dove into their dance material, deftly mixing Ra-'s vocals to deep synth and electronic beats. By the end of their set they had the crowd moving to some house beats and truly warmed up for Purity Ring.
Blue Hawaii

Before Purity Ring came on I managed to worm my way up to front of the crowd to get a better view. The enormous stage of the Crofoot was decorated with hanging balloons and Corin's syths were decorated with lights that lit up when struck.

Purity Ring

Besides the intermittently lit balloons the stage was mostly dark with vocalist Megan off to the side singing their beautifully crafted melodies. There wasn't a lot of talk between songs (actually none) but their performance thrilled the crowd as they continued to push forward to get a better view. After half their set was completed I faded back in the crowd to get try and get some air. The crowd was so dense I had problems getting to the back of the club. However, what Purity Ring managed to accomplish was creating an intimate atmosphere with the audience that was captivating for each and everyone present.

Blowout 2013: Night 5

Posted on 14:11 by Unknown
Night 5 of Blowout 2013, May 3rd, 2013

The night started for me with a smattering of downtown Ferndale stereotypes. After I parked my car a nervous cougar (for real) asked me to walk her to Boogie Fever (for real), where her sister was having her bachelorette party (for real).

The first performance I saw was the last few songs of Almost Free's set at Rustbelt Market. Is that Love Meets Lusts' old lighting set up?

On that same block Michael Mars and the God Particle was playing at Found Sound. This band is comprised of one of the guys from Marco Polio and the New Vaccines. They don't quite meet the bar that's set by Marco Polio, by I was still in to it.

Pewter Cub of course had to be fashionably late at the Ferndale Library. I didn't stick around long enough to see if they would play their "radio" song, but they did do a great Pixies cover.

After circling around and sampling sounds that didn't impress me, it was back to the Ferndale Library for Pupils. The lead singer is the other guy from Marco Polio. This band just didn't do it for me, so it was time to look for something else.

Crane Wives have been getting some hype lately in anticipation of the Blowout performance at the Loving Touch, and they've also been cited as an example of too much "nu-country folk" bands on the lineup. I liked these guys, but I didn't love it.

Lightshow Bob has given his endorsement of the Ferndale expansion. He was running the lights from his self-made "lightar" at the Loving Touch. I never made it over to Kelly's Bar last weekend, but he was probably there too.

The last act of the night at Rustbelt Market was Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas. A great show from a band that I've been able to catch sporadically over the last few years. The Rustbelt was packed by this time. It was nice to some place other than the Loving Touch get a big crowd.

Back to the Loving Touch to see the Ragbirds. When I came into the room the fiddle player was doing an impressive sort of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" type thing, so I . In comparison to the Crane Wives, they can do the whole indie-folk thing better (or whatever you call folksy music that isn't being made for the country music crowd).

Bands I saw last night that I'm putting in the "whatever" category: White Shag, Joshua Davis Trio, Chris Degnore and the Black Drops, Palaces, and Pupils.

Downtown Ferndale doesn't have anything like Campau Tower, but it does have this food cart behind the WAB.

For those who might be worried that downtown Ferndale might be losing too much of its character this weekend, the cheesey night clubs were still open. I spotted the shiny shirt and garish jewelry crowd at John D. American Bistro, among other places.

Recommendations for Saturday night:
Fur, 10:50-11:20, at the Loving Touch
Electric Fire Babies, 11:50-12:30, at Como's

Show Review: Dirtyphonics wsg Le Castle Vania at The Crofoot Ballroom on May 2, 2013

Posted on 09:41 by Unknown

As the EDM bubble continues to build larger and larger, so do the different approaches to live performance. From 1-man dj sets, to EDM acts with live singing and instrumentation, and even twerkers and hype men, acts are constantly trying to change things up. Dirtyphonics accomplish this with a 4 man, high energy dj set.

Up and coming French dubstep and drum and bass foursome, Dirtyphonics, performed at The Crofoot Ballroom on Thursday night with opening support from Le Castle Vania and ETC! ETC!. From the opening sample of Redman’s “Let’s Get Dirty”, the crowd knew that they were in for a special night of loud playing EDM music. The four pieced, Dirtyphonics, maintain steady energy throughout their live sets, the fact that they’re a four man group works to their advantage and allows them to come into the audience to stage dive, spray water on the audience, and even stamp the crowd (yes, with an ink stamper) throughout the show. They play their live shows using a CDJ or beatpad, which allows them to re-edit their songs live while playing them.  Dirtyphonics are currently on the road in support of their album Irreverence, which was released in March by Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. Their set was highlighted by Irreverence tracks “DIRTY”, “Los Angeles”, which features Modestep, and their next single “No Stopping Us” which features UK based rap group, Foreign Beggers.

Dirtyphonics are comprised of members Pho, Charly, Thomas, and Pitchin, who all DJ and work the stage in unison. The audience became pure chaos when Dirtyphonics broke into their remix of the Skrillex hit “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”. Dirtyphonics will next be in town next month as part of Belle Isle’s rock and dubstep heavy Orion Fest which includes Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bassnectar, Datsik and Borgore amongst others. The hard rock/heavy metal component was prominent during the show, as Dirtyphonics stopped to pay tribute to Slayer’s Jeff Hanneman, whose death had been announced earlier that day. The focal point of Dirtyphonics live show is “the crown”, a strobing four-pointed upside-down crown upon which each member claims a point. The illuminated crown is the foundation of their light-show.

Atlanta’s Le Castle Vania, aka Dylan Eiland, opened the show playing a fast-paced set to a still filing in crowd. On stage, Le Castle Vania exudes fun and boyish likability, you want to have fun because it appears that he's enjoying himself. His set included his take on Knife Party’s “Internet Friends”, Smashing Pumpkins’ “Zero”, Daft Punk’s “Around The World” and Kaskade’s “Turn It Down. LCV also included his original tracks “The Light” and “Play Loud” into his raucous, roughly hour long set. Le Casle Vania last made it Detroit as part of 2011 and 2012’s touring EDM-filled Identity Festival. Expect to hear more from both of these rising stars quite soon.
