What is the Waylon Fund?
During the recent South by San Jose celebration at SXSW, Shiner announced a new partnership with the Waylon Fund for Diabetes Research.
Each year, fans all over the country celebrate the life, the legend and the music of Waylon Jennings by holding Waylon Jennings Birthday Bashes at bars and music venues on or around his June 15 birthday. Many of those Birthday Bashes are fundraisers for the Waylon Fund for Diabetes Research. This year, Shiner Black is getting involved to help raise money and awareness for the fund.
Why is Shiner Black partnering with the Waylon Fund?
Waylon Jennings was a professional musician from 1958 until his death from diabetes complications in 2002, but it was as a leader of the "Outlaw Country" movement in the 1970s that you really began to see his impact on the country music scene. The Littlefield, Texas-native had an impressive solo career and was also known for his collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.
It was also in the 1970s that Shiner beer found a foothold in the Austin music scene that helped launch it from its humble small-town roots into a beer prized across the country. Jennings was loved for his independence and authenticity, traits associated with Shiner as well.
Who (What?) is TGen and The Waylon Fund?
TGen is the Translational Genomics Research Institute; the Waylon Fund, founded by Waylon's widow Jessi Colter and their son Shooter Jennings, is part of the TGen Foundation.
The Arizona-based non-profit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research focused on helping patients with diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders and diabetes.
The Waylon Fund, through TGen, allows doctors to more accurately predict who is at greatest risk of developing diabetes and its associated complications, while also developing better strategies for identifying and managing aspects of the disease.
