TONIGHT: "Line by Line: Drawing Explored" exhibition at Detroit Artists Market

Posted on 12:17 by Unknown

LINE by LINE Drawing Explored

April 19th, 2013 – May 24th, 2013

The Detroit Artists Market (DAM) is pleased to present LINE BY LINE Drawing Explored, a group exhibition with 31 local artists.  Curated by Jennifer Seibert and Jack O. Summers, exhibition runs April 19th – May 24th, 2013. DAM will host a public opening reception Friday, April 19th from 6-9pm where gallery visitors can meet the artists and have an opportunity to view and purchase the wide array of works investigating the notion of drawing. DAM will also host a Gallery Talk with the exhibiting artists on Saturday, April 27th from 2-4 pm.

As co-curators Jennifer Seibert and Jack O. Summers explain, "We attempted to select a wide range of possibilities. Ones that investigate all the many results a drawing can become. A strong image, a witty idea, phenomenal craft, a whimsical notation, a mysterious combination, an extraordinary object, a beautiful detail, a breathtaking representation, an abstraction of reality, or a straight forward approach to a clear expression to investigate drawings endless possibilities."

LINE BY LINE Drawing Explored includes artists:

Corrie Baldauf, Jeanne Bieri, Joyce Brienza, Coco Bruner, Sandra Cardew, Jeff Cancelosi, Larry Cressman, Topher Crowder, Sergio De Giusti, Anne Fracassa, Lynn Galbreath, Denes Galfi,  Adrian Hatfield, Tom Humes, Marc LaChance, Addie Langford, Molly Nuzzo, Michael Reedy, Rachel Reynolds, Amy Sacksteder, Gypsy Schindler, Claudia Shepard, Dolores Slowinski, Brian Spolans, Ryan Standfest, Brooks Stevens, Sally Schluter Tardella, Amanda Thatch, Greg Tom, Cody VanderKaay, and Alison Wong.

Curatorial Statement – Jennifer Seibert and Jack O. Summers

A point joins another point to become a line. One end of a line joins another to become a shape. Add a tone and it becomes a plane. The creation of a drawing, the process from which it was formed, and the endless derivations it can become are what this exhibition is trying to capture. A drawing can investigate, study, and question the real, the visible, or the tangible world. It can record objects and events, or communicate ideas. It can be a transcription from memory, or a way of collecting and keeping impressions and ideas, a way of making visible the world of our imagination.

Drawing as a verb is the act of making marks on a surface so as to create a visual image of a form or a shape. Drawing as a noun is the visual image produced as a result of the chosen action. Its purpose is endless: psychological revelation, social commentary, playfulness, inventive meandering, dramatic impact, an accurate transcription, or an informal notation. Its result can be a reflection of the subjective space of emotion, or the objective retelling of tangible information.

About the Detroit Artists Market

Detroit Artists Market (DAM) was established in 1932 and is the oldest, continuously operating nonprofit contemporary art gallery in the Detroit area. The DAM fosters a vibrant and distinctive artistic community in Detroit and Michigan by promoting, exhibiting and selling the works of emerging and established artists. DAM accomplishes this through art exhibitions, educational programming, and by serving as a resource to understanding and enjoyment of art.

The gallery is located at 4719 Woodward Avenue at Forest St. in Detroit (three blocks south of the Detroit Institute of Arts). Hours are 11am to 6pm Tuesdays through Saturdays. Exhibitions and events are free of charge. On-site parking is available. For more information on DAM programs, please call  313-832-8540, or visit www.detroitartistsmarket.org.
