Wild At Heart


Recently got back from my road trip with my parents. I think I averaged about 4 hours sleep a night but we got back home in 4 days. Things were a bit tough as she ended up in the hospital Sunday morning but they gave her some medication to get her home. Luckily we got on the road Monday though I didn't get the opportunities to do much exploring as I had last year. My first day down in Florida saw a tornado just a few miles away from the hotel my parents were staying in and no open pools all the way back. Tried to book into a nice Best Western with a pool but they had no rooms with 2 queen beds so we stayed somewhere else. Such a shame since I was really dying for a pool.

Of the few places I was able to check out on our route home, I started with Deanno's in Dublin, GA. USA Today ranked them the best Pizza in Georgia in 2011 for their mozzarella, capicola, sausage and roasted red onions brick oven pizza so I ordered that along with a side of mussels in garlic sauce and bread with olive oil. A very tasty pizza though my favorite is still the seafood pizza at Pizza Papolis. Dublin is a very scenic town but mostly everything was closed on Monday evening that I would have enjoyed.





The next day we wound up at Fort Dobbs in Statesville, NC which was used for frontier defense during the French and Indian War and named after Arthur Dobbs, the colonial Governor who designed the fort. They are making plans to put up a structure that better represents what the fort would have been like back then since the original fort was abandoned in 1766 but research has found documents of the fort’s original position and appearance. The main building does have some excavated materials from the site dating back to when it was in use which makes it a small diversion for fans of that era.







After the fort, I grabbed a bit to eat at Groucho's Deli in the downtown area. I picked up what is there most popular sub, called the STP Dipper, which is roast beef, turkey, swiss and bacon crumbs accompanied by their famous Formula 45 sauce which was very tasty. It was just different enough of a taste to hit the spot.





Our last day on the road had me stop at the Camera Heritage Museum which I missed the previous year. They have over 700 cameras though only about 200 on display at this time including a 1920’s baseball camera, various spy cameras (including 1 used in 2 James Bond films), a war plane camera (the newest addition the owner is holding in the pic) and basically every type of camera imaginable. If you enjoy camera technologies, this is a great place to stop at.





So now I’m back and my mom ended up back in the hospital but she is doing OK and they think they finally found out what was wrong with her. Too bad they couldn’t have found this out down in Orlando. However it works out, things are slowly getting back to normal and I’m looking forward to a nice summer.

Don't forget the Metrotimes Blowout continues on Friday and Saturday in Hamtramck with lots of great music. Always a great time with plenty of great homegrown Detroit music showing why Detroit is one of the hottest music scenes in the country. On Friday, I like Child Bite and Terrible Twos @ Polish National Alliance Hall and the Hard Lessons at Small's. For Saturday, you got the Sights @ New Dodge Lounge, Loretta Lucas, the Secret Twins and Javelins @ Polish National Alliance Hall, Oscillating Fan Club and Grande Nationals @ Small's, Sisters Of Your Sunshine Vapor @ Whiskey In The Jar. Any music fan should make the effort to get out and support this wonderful event.
